Venus Kriya: Meditating on the HEART with your partner.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all!   I hope you are taking some time today to celebrate LOVE and to express your gratitude for the love that abounds within and without.  We had a fabulous Valentine’s weekend here in Charlottesville.  On Saturday we attended a Thai Yoga Massage workshop led by our wonderful Ashtanga teacher.  It was blissful and it felt so good after a long week of hard practice!  Yesterday Boyfriend Yogi and I led a free partner yoga class at Studio 206.  We had 12 couples there and it was sooo fun.   We practiced Surya Namaskars, a lot of great partner stretches and then we taught them the basics of Acro-Yoga “flying”.  To finish up we practiced the Heart Lotus Venus Kriya.  This is a partner meditation coming from the Kundalini tradition as taught by Yogi Bhajan.  It is short, sweet and profound.  The room was abuzz with LOVE and UNION.  It was such a beautiful sight to look out and see these loving couples meditating together.  Sharing a spiritual practice with your beloved is an amazing gift.  It being V-Day (bear with me!): Shout out to Boyfriend Yogi – I am so grateful to have you in my life and to be on this spiritual journey with you – nothing makes me happier than practicing yoga by your side every morning and meditating together every night – what bliss – I am such a blessed girl!  Wahe Guru!!!

I am offering this beautiful Kundalini practice to you today.  I hope it brings you into a place of love and union with your partner.  Venus Kriyas are a wonderful practice to share with your partner.  This one only takes 6 minutes.   There are a couple rules that must be followed – first, ALWAYS tune in with chanting Ong Namo Gurudev Namo three times.  This connects you with the lineage and creates a sacred, protected space in which you can practice.  This kriya should not be practiced with sexual energy – approach it with neutrality and purity.  Also – Venus Kriyas are not to be practiced by pregnant women.  (I don’t know why this is, but it’s the rule and I don’t question the ancient yogic traditions!)

To practice HEART LOTUS:

Sit in Easy Pose or Lotus Pose across from your partner.  Look into his or her eyes.

Part 1 – Form your hands into a louts – all the fingers are spread, hands cupped, only the little fingers touch.  The man (or whichever one of you chooses) suspends his little fingers under the woman’s little fingers but the fingers of the partners DO NOT touch.  This makes a heart lotus.  (See picture above).  Look deeply into the eyes of your partner, look into the soul, the heart of your partner and breathe freely.  Continue for 1-1/2 to 3 minutes.

Part 2 – Then place one hand over the other at the Heart Center.  Close your eyes and meditate on the Heart Center.  Connecting to the place where Unconditional Love resides, go deeply within your self, to the center of your very being.  Continue for 1-1/2 to 3 minutes.

End by deeply inhaling and exhaling together 3 times, then relax.

Bow your heads and close your meditation by chanting long SAT NAMs together.  Sat – Truth.  Nam – Identity.

Blessings of LOVE and LIGHT.

Sat Nam
