Kundalini Yoga for Healing Addictions.

Hello dear readers –

A long time ago, when I posted about Yoga and Addiction I promised to teach you a powerful meditation tool to help in the recovery process….and I’m finally making good on that promise.

This meditation for habituation readjusts the brain and works for any type of addiction – food, drugs, alcohol, smoking, facebook (haha..maybe…), you-name-it – because it works at the root of the problem.

Try it consistently for 40 days.  This is how long it takes to make or break a habit.  A few years back I did this one for 40 days when I was weaning myself off of booze and American Spirits – it really works!

To practice this meditation, sit in a comfortable upright position.

Straighten the spine and make sure the first six lower vertebrae are locked forward (to do so you must use your body locks – bandas!)

Close the eyes and roll the gaze up the focus at the Brow Point – the 3rd eye.

Your hands make a mudra – tighten your hands into fists and extend the thumbs straight.  Place the thumbs on the temples and find the niche where the thumbs fit perfectly. (This spot is the lower anterior portion of the frontal bone above the temporal-spenoidal suture – in anatomical terms – but you will feel the little dent where the thumbs fit!)

Keeping the teeth pressed together throughout the practice, squeeze your molars tightly and then release the pressure  – continue with this alternating squeezing/releasing.  You will feel a muscle under your thumbs move in rhythm with the squeezing.  Maintain a firm pressure with the hands.

In time with the teeth moving, silently vibrate the five primal sounds – the Panj Shabd:

SAA-TAA-NAA-MAA

Continue for 5 to 7 minutes.  Over time and practice you can increase to 20 minutes a day and ultimately to 31 minutes a day.

Remember to TUNE IN first with the Adi Mantra – Ong Namo Gurudev Namo – 3x and then close with chanting a few long SAT NAMs.

And always cover your head when you practice Kundalini Yoga!

Here are some comments about this practice from Yogi Bhajan (He made these statements 30 some years ago but I think it’s plain to see now  that the medical establishment is already beginning to cautiously acknowledge the benefits of meditation!):

“This meditation is one of a class of meditations that will become well known to the future medical society.  Meditation will be used to alleviate all kinds  of mental and physical afflictions.  But it may be as many as 500 years, however, before the new medical science will understand the effects of this kind of meditation well enough to delineate and measure all its parameters.

The pressure exerted by the thumbs triggers a rhythmic reflex current into the central brain.  This current activates the brain area directly underneath the stem of the pineal gland.  It is an imbalance in this area that makes mental and physical addictions seemingly unbreakable.

In modern culture, this imbalance is pandemic.  If we are not addicted to smoking, eating, drinking or drugs, then we are addicted subconsciously to acceptance, advancement, rejection, emotional love, etc,.  All of these lead us to insecure and eratic behavior patterns.

Imbalance in the pineal area upsets the radiance of the pineal gland itself.  It is the pulsating radiance that regulates the pituitary gland.  Since the pituitary regulates the rest of the glandular system, the entire body and mind go out of balance.  This meditation corrects the problem.  It is excellent for everyone but particularly effective for rehabilitation efforts in drug dependence, mental illness and phobic conditions.”

Give it a try.  It feels a little odd at first – but stay consistent and you will feel results!

Blessings.
