Vayu Siddhi: A Review of David Garrigues’ Pranayama Guide.

“Third series is the new second series.”

It is this kind of thinking and teaching that leads a practicing teacher to elevate those around him to a “higher level” than you might initially suspect. It is also this kind of thinking, generated by an awareness of students’ ability to tackle an ever increasingly level of difficulty in their asana practice, that motivates a teacher like David to ensure that the foundations of his students are rock solid.

And, what’s more foundational to the practice of Ashtanga than the breath? The simple answer: Nothing.

So, it only makes sense then that David would seek out every opportunity to provide instruction on the method and role of breathing in the practice from its humble beginnings all the way up to and including the full pranayama sequence transmitted via Pattabhi Jois. This is exactly what you will find within Vayu Siddhi.

Those fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to work with David in person know thatDavid excels at making the difficult approachable and the simple impossible. And, admittedly having spent my fair share of time in his presence, I can’t imagine a more true to life experience than the instruction provided throughout the two discs and hardbound book of Vayu Siddhi.

 Vayu Siddhi really is the complete package.

The first disc helps you focus on and develop the fundamentals of your ujjayi breathing practice by breaking it down to its most essential patterns through a variety of exercises, discussions and tutorials. It lays the foundation upon which to build a safe, comfortable and effective pranayama practice.

For many practitioners, the information contained in just this first disc will keep you busy for months to years. It’s packed.

The book, which is beautifully handcrafted and bound by some of David’s students, compliments and enhances the instructions contained within the DVD. This is really nice for those of us who tend towards the more “intellectual” of the learning equation, but regardless where you land on the spectrum, it’s beneficial to have multiple avenues of access to this somewhat complex subject.

The second disc provides you an opportunity to employ all you’ve garnered from the book and first disc by bringing you to the practice of Ashtanga’s pranayama sequence as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. It does this in two different segments. In the first segment, David instructs each of the five pranayamas individually and then in last segment, he puts it all together and leads you through a full, uninterrupted Ashtanga pranayama sequence. A full half-hour later you will have successfully begun a practice of ashtanga’s fourth limb.

One final mention concerns the price.

Some reviewers have expressed apprehension regarding the $110 price tag and so I want to avoid anyone suffering from sticker shock. I won’t deny that Vayu Siddhi is pricey by yoga DVD standards of today. However, here is how I see it.

How much do you pay for an average month’s worth of classes? If you’re like me, I’m guessing it’s somewhere in this ball park. Furthermore, I know that I’ve spent way more than this on weekend workshops. So, which makes more sense? A weekend’s worth of instruction, or a lifetime of personal instruction at your fingertips?

I know which I’d opt for and given its quality, both interms of instruction and presentation, Vayu Siddhi is worth every penny.
